Turn Off the Lights! with Dark Mode for Salesforce Lightning

Salesforce Astro Sleeping

I am someone who is unashamedly a Dark Mode UI only person.

If it’s an option that can be turned on - I’ll turn it on. If it’s not an option? I’ll find a third party solution.

Sadly Salesforce doesn’t natively provide us the option to implement a Dark Mode UI option across your org or on the Trailhead. Historically they created an extension for Chrome that gave a Dark Mode option however this has been disabled since November 2021. No such native luck. Third party though? Plenty of options.

Google Chrome is operating system agnostic and per this Salesforce help article is the only browser that has no special setup considerations, no limitations and fully supports Lightning and Experience builder.

Log in to Salesforce, and click on the Dark Mode extension tab to enable (and switch between light and dark mode moving forward).

This extension will invert the colours of icons (such as the application (top left), or user (top right)), but will play nicely with photos posted in chatter or similar.

If you’re finding atypical behaviour a click of a button gets you back into Light Mode.

For those of you using Firefox — ‘Sauron - Dark mode for all websites’ is an extension you can find here.

For those of you on Safari — Turn Off the Lights is an extension primarily used for enhanced video watching but can also be used for our intended purposes. Here’s a link to a walkthrough for getting it all set up.

Hopefully this helps rest your eyes while you spend some late nights studying for the Administrator Certification.

Hopefully in the future Salesforce will provide this accessibility feature natively but for now here is some options to help you out.

See you on the Trail.
